The site: the Huaron Mine

Huaron Mining District includes one of the richest polymetallic deposits in Peru. Located in the Pasco region and belonging to the Central Andes belt, the district develops between 4500 and 4700 meters above sea level and is rich in Zinc, Lead, Silver, Copper and Gold.

The district consists of the three underground mines of Huaron, Animon and Islay, and the discovery of the deposits and the extraction of minerals date back to 1912. The nearby presence of the Naticocha lagoon and the general geological conformation determine a very high level of humidity and a strong presence of liquid within the underground extraction sites.

Currently, the Huaron mine produces silver-rich zinc, lead and copper concentrated with the liquid flotation technique to separate the aerophilic components from the hydrophilic ones, so that the latter, sedimenting on the bottom, can be filtered more easily.

The Challenge: installation of a extraction sludge filtration plant

The property has high expectations from the Huaron mine, to the point that it has planned a series of millionaire investments to improve the productivity of the site and expand the processing capacity of the plant from 3,200 tons per day of ore to 4,500 tons per day.

Among the various projects launched in Huaron, one involved the installation of a new extraction sludge filtration plant and the replacement of the dry storage plant. The main objective of the project was to reduce the moisture of the mining residues (tailing) to improve the management of the residues themselves and the efficiency of the whole process. It was necessary to ensure a high supply pressure of over 16 bars and reliable operation in an overall challenging environment.

The solution: Pemo Pumps for the treatment of zinc residues

After a careful analysis of the needs, the supplier Diemme Filtration, a specialist in the production of filter presses and thickeners, identified Pemo Pumps as the most suitable solution for the treatment of zinc residues. In particular, the choice fell on three Pemo M280 double-body metal “superalloy” pumps (AO/AB/DC/AS-B20 MINE version) that reach 1000 m3/h in the filter filling phase.

The pumps can feed two Diemme Filtration GHT 2500 F filter presses with a guaranteed productivity of about 4000 tds (Total Dissolved Solids) per day.

The results: only 16% of final residual moisture

Pemo Pumps have proven to be the ideal solution due to their reliability, strong wear resistance and ability to operate at high pressures. In particular, the choice of material in contact with the mud fell on Hardollay Pemo, currently the hardest and most resistant pump material on the market (750-800 HB).

The use of Pemo Pumps to feed Diemme Filtration filter presses has led to excellent results. A final residual moisture of 16% was achieved, fully satisfying the customer’s operational needs. In addition, Pemo Pumps, thanks to the particular care in the design and the double mechanical seal, guarantee zero leaks in the environment and do not contaminate the extracted product in any way.

Ultimately, thanks to the advanced technology, the care in the choice of materials of Pemo Pumps and their ability to adapt to extreme conditions, the Huaron mine can now count on a more efficient and sustainable process, reducing tailing management costs and ensuring maximum environmental sustainability.
